Last Tuesday was an electric night in Atlanta. Not only did the Braves destroy the Astros to bring home the World Series, but it was also election night, and over 90,000 people went to the polls to elect Atlanta's new city leaders.
There were several races on the ballot, but the biggest shock of the night was city councilman Andre Dickens beating out former two-term mayor Kasim Reed, handing Reed the first electoral loss of his political career.
City council president Felicia Moore was the star of the night. She earned the most votes and maintained a commanding lead against the rest of the field from the night's start. Moore dominated in Buckhead and performed the strongest on the Eastside. Reed took most of the precincts on the Westside and won big in southeast Atlanta. However, Dickens was able to take just enough votes away from Reed in southwest Atlanta and in the Sylvan Hills and West End neighborhoods to finish second.
So now both Moore and Dickens are headed to a November 30th runoff. With Reed out, this has become a totally different race, and it'll be interesting to see which of the candidates Reed voters put their support behind.
According to an exit poll conducted by 20-20 Insight, Dickens now has a 46-39 edge over the council president. Dickens has also earned the endorsement of former mayoral candidate Sharon Gay, who finished fourth in the race.
