Councilmembers defend their votes on new police facility

On Monday August 16, the Atlanta City Council chose to table a vote on whether or not to approve the development of a $90 million police training facility in DeKalb county.

This facility has been very controversial, as it represents a waste of resources and a danger to the environment for some Atlanta citizens, and a necessary new hub for adequate police training for others. Some city council members acknowledged an overall lack of public engagement throughout the development of this new facility, which is why the motion to postpone the vote was brought forward.

During the meeting councilwoman Joyce Shepherd, who has pushed hard for the new facility, expressed her disappointment in the council's vote; while councilman and mayoral candidate Antonio Brown said the entire process has been "disingenuous."

Fellow city councilman and mayoral candidate Andre Dickens said that while the city does need a new police training facility, the council needs to focus on making improvements to the plan first.

Atlanta City Council will meet again on Sept. 7 to potentially discuss and vote on this piece of legislation.
