APS board decides on new Superintendent

The Atlanta Public School board voted on Monday (May 11) to hire Dr. Lisa Herring as its new superintendent.

The Macon native is coming to Atlanta after serving at the Superintendent of Birmingham City Schools for the past three years.

While in Birmingham, Herring facilitated a major turnaround for the Birmingham school system, improving the school district from a failing grade of 'F' to a passing score of 'C'. Additionally, a reported 67 percent of all schools in the district improved on their individual school state report cards.

Herring was also responsible for eliminating 17 of the 22 'F' rated schools.

Herring will be replacing Dr. Maria Carstarphen as APS' Superintendent beginning July 1.
