Last Monday (June 14) the Atlanta City Council Public Safety committee held a public meeting where representatives from Atlanta's police and fire departments provided the public with updates on their recent performance.
During the meeting, District 4 city councilwoman Cleta Winslow asked APD Deputy Police Chief Todd Coyt if the homeless were violating any city codes by being in the city's public parks after 11pm.
Winslow says there are houseless people living, urinating and defecating in the parks in her district, and that it poses a health risk to park-goers as well as city employees who work in the parks. Check out a clip from the meeting below:
"Last year I had an event at Cleopus Johnson Park and I smelled feces in the park," Winslow exclaimed on the call. "That's not good. That's a health related problem. We don't want our workers to get sick. That's what I'm afraid of...they've got to go. They can't be in there at night."
Officer Coyt didn't offer much of a response, but said he would connect with his colleagues and look into it.
