DeKalb Schools under scrutiny for COVID relief spending

DeKalb County Schools is under very close watch right now.

A recent investigative report revealed the district spent over $86 million of their 2020 COVID relief money on employee bonuses.

Neighboring school districts spent far less. Fulton County Schools spent $23 million of their CARES funding on bonuses, while Atlanta Public Schools spent just $11 million.

The bonuses, or "salary supplements," ranged from $3K to $10K per person for more than 10,000 DeKalb County School employees.

This report comes just a couple of weeks after the school board fired former DeKalb Superintendent Cheryl Watson-Harris, without giving a reason. According to the report, Ms. Watson-Harris did not receive any extra payments.

State auditors are reportedly in the midst of reviewing how DeKalb handled its $486 million in CARES money.
